Arizona Senate Republicans have issued a statement condemning the recent political violence in Minnesota. The incidents involved the fatal shooting of Democrat State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home in Brooklyn Park. Additionally, Democrat State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times at their home in Champlin but survived after undergoing surgery.
The suspect in these attacks remains at large. Reports indicate that the individual was impersonating a police officer, wearing tactical gear, and driving a vehicle similar to a police SUV. Authorities describe the attacks as politically motivated due to the discovery of ‘No Kings’ flyers in the suspect’s vehicle.
Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp expressed horror over the events: “We are horrified by the cold-blooded assassinations of Representative Hortman, her husband, and the brutal attack on Senator Hoffman and his wife. Such acts of political violence are an assault on our democracy.” She added that Arizona stands with Minnesota during this difficult time.
Senate Majority Whip Frank Carroll also condemned the violence: “Targeting elected officials and their families for their legislative decisions is a horrible act of violence that will not be tolerated.” He likened the incident to foreign interests or organized crime attempting to influence government actions. Carroll called on Arizonans to reject hatred and division while expressing condolences to those affected by this tragedy.
Both leaders emphasized the need for protecting public servants from violence related to political expression.
