North Coast Church pastor Chris Brown addressed Grand Canyon University students on March 17, focusing on the challenges of maintaining faith in a culture filled with distractions and temptations. Speaking at the Global Credit Union Arena during Monday’s Chapel, Brown used the biblical story of Daniel to illustrate how steadfast obedience to God can help individuals resist cultural pressures.

The topic is significant for students facing decisions about identity and values in a changing world. Brown compared modern temptations—such as fashion and lifestyle trends—to tactics used by Babylonian rulers thousands of years ago to assimilate young Israelites into their culture. He said these historical strategies mirror contemporary efforts that encourage people to prioritize worldly offerings over spiritual commitments.

Brown recounted how Daniel and his friends resisted Babylonian indoctrination by refusing rich foods from King Nebuchadnezzar, instead choosing vegetables and water as an act of obedience. “This was a God thing, saying, ‘You stand for me. Watch what I do with you. Watch what I do with you.’ And the official was amazed,” Brown said during his address. He emphasized that Daniel’s group maintained their faith even when faced with severe consequences: “But they were not letting culture in here,” he said while pointing to his heart.

Reflecting on student life choices, Brown noted two paths: one leading toward fulfillment through faith, another toward disconnection when chasing external validation while lacking Christian identity. “There’s a purpose in creation, and therefore you and I have a purpose,” he said. He encouraged students to let their commitment influence every aspect of life: “Obedience also precedes blessings.”

Grand Canyon University operates as a private Christian educational institution located in Phoenix, Arizona according to the official website. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs across fields such as nursing, business, and healthcare—with flexible learning options both online and on campus according to the official website. It centers its mission around Christian values aimed at helping students realize their potential while pursuing degrees according to the official website. The school has also received high rankings for its nursing program, campus environment, and education offerings according to the official website.

Brown concluded by reminding students that true obedience means trusting God regardless of outcomes: “If you’re trying to obey God or come to a chapel because you need some Magic Jesus dust on your life, that’s not Christianity… I promise you this God is the same today [and] tomorrow… If He has you, He’ll take care of everything else.”

The next Chapel speaker will be Tim Birdwell from Phoenix Bible Church.
