Dr. Myra Wilkinson, an online faculty member at Grand Canyon University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, recently participated in a panel on ethics at a counseling conference in Vietnam. The event was the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors Conference held in Ho Chi Minh City.
Wilkinson highlighted the importance of the conference, stating, “I believe this experience offered a meaningful opportunity to share knowledge, learn from international colleagues, and deepen clinical skills in culturally attuned family work.”
The conference focused on essential skills for working with couples and families. It attracted professionals from counseling, psychology, social work, and mental health fields who were interested in enhancing their clinical competencies globally.
Among the topics discussed were motivational interviewing techniques through a session titled “A Practical Guide to Using OARS (Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflective Listening and Summaries)” and another session called “Mapping the Family Story: How to Use Genograms and Family Timelines in Therapy,” which offered tools for assessing multigenerational patterns.
IAMFC aims to advance marriage, couple, and family counseling practices worldwide.
