Grand Canyon University junior Reagan James Broome gained widespread attention after performing at last year’s GCU’s Got Talent, according to a Mar. 4 article. Broome, who initially joined the event for fun, saw his music career take off following his appearance on stage.
Broome’s participation in the talent show led to a significant increase in his social media following and new opportunities in music. He went from about 200 Instagram followers to 900 immediately after the event and now has 37,000 followers, with hundreds of thousands of views on his music reels. “GCU’s Got Talent was kind of like a big, ‘Hello, world!’ moment, at least in the GCU sphere,” Broome said. “It exploded way bigger than anything I could have ever imagined. Those five minutes of being onstage and getting to sing in front of 3,000 people was a dream.”
Broome grew up singing worship music at his church in Olympia, Washington, and began writing songs as a child. Although he chose to study mechanical engineering at Grand Canyon University (GCU), he continued to pursue music as a hobby. His mother, Kylie Broome, encouraged him to audition for the talent show: “We knew that being onstage was a way for him to feel like himself… I just wanted him to be reminded of who God has created him to be.” After performing Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” during the competition, Broome’s online presence grew rapidly.
Broome has since released several songs on Spotify and uses Instagram to share worship music and engage with the GCU community. His recent collaboration with Christian singer Josiah Queen came after winning an open verse challenge for Queen’s song “Demons.” Kylie Broome said about her son: “I can see God sowing so deeply into his heart that there is a beautiful purpose for his life and we are so excited that Reagan is getting the chance to see the fruit of this gift.”
