The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board has recognized five individuals and groups from Washington High School as part of its 2025 Achievement Above All awards. The annual honors celebrate those who have made significant contributions to the school community.

This year’s teacher recipient is Tracey Holberg, a Washington High School graduate who returned to teach after earning degrees from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. Holberg initially taught mathematics and science before moving into full-time dance instruction. She also leads several extracurricular programs, including the Pom program, varsity cheer, and the Korean Club. Holberg’s teaching philosophy centers on building student confidence and resilience: “In mathematics and science, she breaks down complex concepts so every student can understand and succeed. In dance, she creates a supportive environment where students can experiment, make mistakes, and grow.” Her leadership extends to participating in professional organizations and contributing to statewide events.

Student honoree Carol Hanna was recognized for her academic achievements—such as being named an AP Scholar with Distinction—and for her leadership on the softball team. Hanna credits her family’s sacrifices for motivating her success. She has also received awards like the Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Award. Beyond academics, Hanna served as captain of the softball team for four years and participated in youth leadership conferences. Looking ahead, she aims to attend Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University.

Rams United was selected as this year’s outstanding student group. The Unified Sports program brings together more than 85 students annually to participate in inclusive athletic activities that connect general education and special education students. Rams United competes in sports such as bocce ball, bowling, soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and field events through partnerships with organizations like ARCH (Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped). The club previously earned recognition as a National Banner Unified Champion School.

Angela Maya received the support staff award for her work first in attendance services before becoming athletic secretary at Washington High School over three years ago. Colleagues note Maya’s approachability and commitment: “She is a mentor, advocate, and friend to the many students who seek her guidance.” Maya manages logistics for athletics while providing encouragement to students throughout their participation.

Stephanie Scott was honored as volunteer recipient for her service on Washington High School’s PTO over four years—including fundraising efforts and event organization—and for supporting school activities such as football games and dance recitals.

The board highlighted that each honoree strengthens connections within Washington High School by encouraging growth among students: “Each recipient has contributed in ways that strengthen connections, spark confidence, and encourage every student to succeed.”
