The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board honored Independence High School’s Achievement Above All recipients on Mar. 11, recognizing individuals who demonstrate pride and perseverance within the school community. The honorees include a teacher, student, student group, support staff member, and volunteer who have each contributed to the culture and success of Independence High School.
The recognition highlights the importance of dedication, leadership, and service in shaping a positive school environment. Each recipient was selected for their commitment to students and their willingness to invest time in helping others succeed.
Teacher Susan Hadley was recognized for her 21 years of service at Independence High School. A graduate of both the school and the University of Arizona, Hadley has taught mathematics courses including Algebra I and Geometry. She currently serves as Math Department Chair, Title I Coordinator, and Algebra I Team Lead. Colleagues describe her as a trusted mentor whose guidance helps teachers refine their instructional strategies.
Senior Myra Yazzie received the student award for her achievements in academics and athletics. With a 3.9 weighted GPA, Yazzie has excelled in physics, engineering, graphic design, golf—where she qualified twice for state championships—and basketball as team captain and leading scorer. She plans to pursue collegiate golf and a career in medicine.
The Patriot Brigade Marching Band was honored as the student group recipient under director Joseph Karam. The band earned top-five placements at every competition this season in the Arizona Marching Band Association circuit and finished third at state finals. The group also raised over $1,500 for Hispanic student scholarships through partnerships with local organizations.
Support staff member Chris Millett was recognized for more than 15 years of service supporting athletics and operations at Independence High School. Millett began as a volunteer coach in girls’ soccer before taking on roles such as assistant coach for volleyball programs and secretary positions across campus departments.
Volunteer Rob Ambrose continues his involvement after serving 16 years as principal by mentoring students in Advanced Engineering Science projects like restoring a classic Volkswagen bus.
