The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board has recognized several members of the Cortez High School community with its annual Achievement Above All awards. The honors are given to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the school’s culture, student success, and community engagement.

This year’s teacher recipient is Brian Mildener, a Special Education teacher and Instructional Specialist at Cortez High School. With 19 years in education, Mildener is noted for fostering a sense of belonging among students and supporting them academically and personally. He leads programs such as Yearbook, Newspaper, and Social Media, aiming to help students develop both creative and practical skills. According to the board, “What distinguishes Mildener is his belief that strong relationships are essential to student success. He is deeply committed to supporting students of all backgrounds and abilities, often focusing first on building confidence and trust before pushing academic growth.”

Senior Shahad Al Mufti was named the student honoree. Al Mufti participates in Student Council, National Honor Society, choir, soccer, and other organizations while maintaining high academic standards. She has received recognition through Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Arizona Girls State, and as a QuestBridge Finalist. Her experience immigrating from Iraq as a child shaped her resilience and determination to pursue a career in biomedical sciences. The board noted: “Her ability to lead with empathy, maintain academic excellence, and remain fully engaged in her school community reflects the values of Achievement Above All and makes her a deserving recipient of this recognition.”

The Cortez Marching Band received the award for student group achievement. Directed by Vanessa Smith and led by student officers including Drum Major Kimberly Cabrera-Cazarez, the band participated in multiple events such as football games, competitions like AzMBA State Marching Championships, local parades including Veterans Day and Glendale Hometown Christmas Parade. The board stated: “More than performers, these students are ambassadors for Cortez, helping build unity, pride, and connection across campus.”

Rebecca (Becky) Wilson was honored as support staff recipient for her work as a Title I Instructional Aide. A Cortez alumna herself, Wilson provides direct academic support while fostering an encouraging environment for students. She also volunteers with local youth programs and animal rescue efforts.

Haley Tannheimer was recognized as volunteer recipient for her ongoing support of the boys’ basketball program at Cortez High School. She coordinates concessions stands and fundraisers while also volunteering with Fellowship Phoenix Outreach.

According to the district’s statement: “Together, Cortez High School’s Achievement Above All honorees reflect the many ways excellence shows up on campus each day.” The board emphasized that their leadership, creativity, service, and commitment have strengthened the school community.
