The Glendale Union High School District Governing Board has recognized several members of the Glendale High School community as part of its Achievement Above All awards, highlighting individuals and groups who have demonstrated dedication and leadership.
Tiffany Mendez was named Teacher Recipient. With more than 18 years in education, including seven at Glendale High School, Mendez teaches Algebra I, Geometry, and dual-enrollment College Math. She also instructs college-level mathematics at Phoenix College. As the Geometry Professional Learning Community lead, she works with colleagues to improve instruction and expand access to math learning experiences. In addition to her teaching duties, Mendez sponsors the Link Crew program, which helps upperclassmen mentor incoming freshmen.

Janessa Gabaldon Lucero received recognition as Student Recipient. A senior at Glendale High School, Gabaldon Lucero is ranked among the top of her class while preparing for studies in biology and medicine at the University of Arizona. She has been a four-year varsity starter in both softball and basketball, serving as captain for three years in each sport. Her achievements include First Team All-Region honors in softball and Second Team All-Region honors in basketball.
“Janessa’s impact is felt not only through her accomplishments but through the way she approaches every responsibility placed before her. Whether mentoring peers or serving others on a national platform, she leads by example with humility and determination. Her ability to excel across academics, athletics, and service speaks to a deep sense of accountability and purpose. Janessa Gabaldon’s presence at Glendale High School has strengthened school pride, inspired her peers, and set a powerful example of pursuing excellence with integrity and heart.”
The Cross Country team was honored as Student Group Recipient for its efforts both on campus and within the wider community. The program includes 28 student-athletes under Coach Matt Schmitt with senior captains Destiny Hernandez and Juan Rubio leading the group. This year they hosted major events such as the Glendale Showcase invitational—one of Arizona’s largest—and achieved milestones like qualifying an entire boys’ team for state championships for the first time in over a decade.

Team members consistently support one another, push through physical and mental challenges, and invest time in supporting their school and community. Whether training together, cheering on competitors from other schools, or giving back through service, these students represent Glendale High School with pride and purpose. Their collective efforts have strengthened school culture, built lasting connections, and left a meaningful mark on the Glendale community.”
Sarah Coleman was named Support Staff Recipient for her work as an instructional assistant over seven years at Glendale High School.
“Sarah’s impact is most evident in how students respond to her. She greets everyone warmly, listens without judgment, and creates an environment where students feel valued and understood. Whether assisting during class, supporting Unified events, or simply being available when someone needs encouragement, she consistently shows up with compassion and care. Through her dedication to others and willingness to support wherever needed Sarah has strengthened Glendale High School’s sense of community and connection.”
The GHS Alumni Foundation—also known as Knucklehead Foundation—was recognized for its ongoing volunteer work benefiting current students through fundraising activities like car shows that provide direct financial support for athletic programs along with scholarships.
