Speaker of the House Steve Montenegro expressed his dissatisfaction following the Governor’s veto of two budgets passed by the House. These budgets were designed to prevent a government shutdown and ensure essential state services remained operational.
Montenegro stated, “I’m disappointed the Governor has now vetoed two responsible budgets passed by the House—each of which would have prevented a government shutdown and kept essential state services running.”
He emphasized that the House had fulfilled its duty twice by passing a balanced budget focused on responsible spending and core needs. When this plan was not accepted, a continuation budget was proposed to avoid disruption and allow time for further negotiations. Both efforts were ultimately rejected.
Montenegro added, “Despite the Governor’s actions, House Republicans will continue working to keep government operating and protect Arizona taxpayers from the consequences of political brinkmanship.”
The budgets approved by the House concentrated on fundamental functions such as public safety, infrastructure, and government oversight while adhering to fiscal restraint. The continuation budget aimed to extend operations beyond the fiscal year’s end.
