Grand Canyon University’s Welcome Week began Monday, bringing more than 100 events to campus for new and returning students. The week includes move-in activities, orientations, social gatherings, and evening celebrations. Despite high temperatures and unexpected storms in Phoenix, student enthusiasm has remained high.
Welcome Programs managers Garrett Abeyta and Michaella Smith have played key roles in organizing the week’s events. Both described early mornings—arriving before 4 a.m.—and long days with little sleep as they coordinate logistics for the influx of students and families.
Smith said about three hours of sleep per night is typical during Welcome Week. Abeyta reported slightly more at just over four hours nightly. Both shared details about their routines, including favorite breakfast options from campus vendors and items they keep on hand such as water bottles, sunscreen, walkie-talkies, and personal care products.
When asked about planning for weather disruptions, Smith stated: “The show must go on.” Abeyta added: “First response is to find the ponchos.”
Move-in day brings a variety of vehicles to campus. Smith noted that Toyotas are common among incoming students’ cars. She also estimated that approximately 100 U-Haul trucks arrive each day during move-in.
Preparation for Welcome Week begins months in advance. According to Smith: “First conversations happen late winter, like November, December, but we hit the ground in January.” The event requires coordination across multiple departments. Abeyta highlighted this teamwork: “How much partnership it takes. It’s Welcome Programs, Public Safety, Resident Life, Events team and more. It really is such a group project.”
Staff rely on significant resources to support the event’s demands. Abeyta said: “We have about 120,000 water bottles, and we also have a semitruck full of ice.”
Both managers reflected on favorite traditions and aspects of GCU life—from preferred hangout spots to favorite restaurants on campus—and shared practical advice for students moving in or participating in Welcome Week activities.
The week is considered one of the busiest times at Grand Canyon University each year as staff work extended hours—often upwards of 65-70 hours—to ensure a smooth transition for new students.
