The House of Representatives has passed a continuation budget to prevent a government shutdown and ensure the continued operation of state services beyond June 30. Speaker of the House Steve Montenegro emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and transparency in the decision-making process.
In a statement, Montenegro said, “The House acted decisively today to prevent a government shutdown and protect Arizona taxpayers.” He noted that the initial budget deal negotiated by the Senate and Governor Hobbs did not have sufficient support and failed to meet certain standards. Consequently, the House advanced an alternative plan to allow more time for negotiations.
Montenegro highlighted that two weeks prior, House Republicans had approved a balanced budget focused on public safety, infrastructure, and responsible oversight. This proposal was not adopted, but he stressed the importance of adhering to policies reflecting fiscal responsibility and prioritizing Arizona families’ needs.
“This continuation budget ensures state services remain funded while giving lawmakers the time to work toward a better, more responsible solution for all Arizonans,” Montenegro stated.
The continuation budget now moves forward to be considered by the Senate.
