Jake Hoffman, a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, made several posts on his Twitter account in mid-July 2025 discussing topics related to political appointments and detention centers.
On July 16, 2025, Hoffman commented on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s decision not to appoint Joe Gruters as Chief Financial Officer. He quoted DeSantis’s remarks: “So if George Washington rose from the dead & came back & tapped me on the shoulder & said: ‘Will you appoint Joe Gruters CFO?’ My answer would be: ‘No, I can’t do that’”.
Later that day, Hoffman posted about potential names for a detention facility overseen by former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. In his tweet dated July 16, 2025, he wrote: “Rattlesnake Rikers? Gila Monster Gitmo? Saguaro Slammer? Regardless of the name, if @realSheriffJoe’s in charge it’ll 100% include: Pink underwear Chain gang highway cleanups Green bologna Tents not A/C & comfort AZ had ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ way before it was cool”.
In another post on July 17, 2025, Hoffman responded positively to the idea of having a detention center named after him. He stated: “‘Hoffman Hellhole’ That has a nice ring to it! It would be an absolute honor to have a detention center for arrested criminal illegal aliens — right before they’re deported — named after me America First. Americans First.”
Hoffman’s references to pink underwear and chain gangs allude to practices implemented by Joe Arpaio during his tenure as sheriff in Maricopa County. Arpaio became nationally known for his controversial management of county jails and tough-on-crime policies, including requiring inmates to wear pink underwear and live in outdoor tent encampments without air conditioning.
Arizona has a history of high-profile immigration enforcement measures and unique jail conditions. These practices have drawn both criticism from civil rights groups and support from some segments of the public.
