GCU’s new Public Safety Dispatch and Real-Time Operations Center, located near 27th and Georgia avenues, is set to enhance campus safety with advanced technology. The center, developed with the city of Phoenix Adaptive Reuse Program, offers features such as virtual escorts for students walking at night.
Saira Carrazco, a local resident who relocated due to neighborhood issues, expressed optimism about the new substation’s impact on the area. The facility was established through collaboration between Grand Canyon University (GCU), the city of Phoenix police departments, and the 27Collab community coalition.
GCU President Brian Mueller highlighted that the center will provide 24/7 surveillance using modern equipment to improve security on campus and in nearby neighborhoods. GCU Public Safety Director Robert Handy mentioned that students could use an app linked to the operations center for tracking purposes.
The dispatchers will have access to over 500 cameras covering up to 1½ miles around campus. Additionally, a drone permit application has been submitted by the city to further assist police monitoring efforts. The substation also includes facilities for officers such as an interview room and cubicles for paperwork.
The presence of this substation aims to deter crime in a community undergoing transformation. Crime rates have reportedly decreased by 34% over five years, with violent crime dropping by 20% in two years.
Elizabeth Davidson from Alhambra Traditional School noted feeling safer due to increased police presence facilitated by the substation’s proximity.
