Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers faces a hurdle to a third term, with longtime Glendale resident Michelle Robertson throwing her hat into the 2020 race.

Before Robertson formed a committee for a mayoral bid, Weiers was running unopposed for the office he held since January 2013. Robertson ran for Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools four years ago.

Weiers and Robertson will face off in an August primary. The candidate who amasses more than 50% of votes will secure the position as chief executive of the suburban Phoenix city of 250,000.

Aside from Weiers, Glendale City Council Members Joyce Clark in the Yucca District, Ian Hugh in the Cactus District and Ray Malnar in the Sahuaro District also have reelection bids.

Clark’s challenger, Corey Bowen, is the only person to have officially created a campaign committee.

April 6 is the deadline for candidates to submit their nomination paperwork. Once the paperwork is verified, their name goes on the ballot.
