Rovey Farms is among many dairy farms in the West Valley having to dump milk due to falling demand for the product amid COVID-19.
“We can’t stop milking the cows, and when we have the demand decrease drastically, then we have all this milk that has to get disposed of,” Rovey Farms owner Paul Rovey told Glendale Star.
Dairy farms have previously been experiencing less demand for milk because of alternatives such as almond and soy. The coronavirus pandemic has only made things worse as places where the products would normally be distributed such as schools and restaurants are closed. Milk purchases by costumers are also being limited in grocery stores.
Rovey is encouraging people to donate to the Great American Milk Drive which helps food banks provide milk to children and families.
“If anyone wants to help the dairy farmers, buy more milk, eat more cheese and donate to the Great American Milk Drive,” Rovey said. “You’re helping the dairy farmer, you’re helping yourself and you’re helping the needy.”
