Next Tuesday, June 6, my colleagues and I will hold two public hearings on code amendments related to the Prohibition of Ornamental Turf and the requirement to use WaterSense Fixtures in all new development. The Prohibition of Ornamental Turf Unified Development Code amendment proposes to prohibit grasses that serve no purpose other than decoration in all new residential and commercial development. This stems from direction given to the Planning and Development Services Department (PDSD) and Tucson Water staff by Mayor and Council at the Feb. 22, 2023, Study Session. The WaterSense Fixture Requirement Building Code Amendment proposes requiring WaterSense fixtures for all new development. Direction for this amendment was given to PDSD and Tucson Water staff by Mayor and Council at the Oct. 18, 2022, study session.

Below is an update from Operations Division East, the police command that covers much of Ward 2:

In April, TPD's Operations Division East (ODE) focused on an auto theft ring and a series of business burglaries.

In the auto theft cases, ODE detectives identified multiple individuals involved in the theft of Hyundais and Kias within the boundaries of Operations Division East and Operations Division Midtown. ODE detectives believe the suspects are responsible for over 15 auto thefts, dating back to early February 2023. Charges have been filed against nine of the suspects and more arrests are anticipated.

ODE detectives also focused their efforts on a series of after-hours business burglaries. Detectives believe the same suspect(s) are responsible for over a dozen incidents. Thanks to the work of Crime Scene processing and the TPD Crime Lab, one suspect has been identified and is being sought.

ODE is headquartered at the Erik Hite Substation, located at 9670 E Golf Links (near Harrison). They also provide a place for residents to dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs, just bring them by the substation. In April, a prescription drug takeback event yielded 190 pounds of prescription drugs brought in by residents.

It’s June, so it’s time for Tucson Parks and Recreation to host Summer Poolooza. These free pool parties will be held across the city. Events will include Ready, Set, Rec! vans with games and activities, food, music, inflatables, pool fun, and more. Join us for some fun in the sun.

These events will be across town, but we will have one in Ward 2 on Thursday, June 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at  Udall Pool, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road.
