FitFest shows off surging GCU Fitness

Seniors Sophie Kalinke and Zulema Gomez were at the forefront of showcasing the success of GCU Fitness during FitFest at Grand Canyon University. Gomez, after leading a spin class with Kalinke, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a good way to take stress off, especially in college. I feel like it helps me be a happier person.”

The event highlighted the popularity of spin classes offered by GCU Fitness, with up to 500 students participating in group fitness classes each week at various campus locations. Matt Lamb, director of Campus Recreation, emphasized the importance of physical health on mental well-being, stating, “The more active you are, it has such a benefit to you mentally.”

Gomez shared her positive experience with spin classes at Verde Fitness Center, mentioning, “It’s a really great way to meet friends and have a community of like-minded people who love fitness.” The event aimed to introduce students to a variety of classes, with senior Aiden Barnes expressing his newfound interest after trying a spin class, saying, “It was a challenge, they really push you. I’m intrigued to try it out.”

D’Annette Stephens, fitness program coordinator, highlighted the sense of community and teamwork fostered by fitness classes, noting the positive impact on freshmen. Student instructor Paige Sauerbreit emphasized the supportive environment of fitness classes, particularly for women students, stating, “It’s nice to have fitness classes to give them a community and just a structure to work out.”

FitFest also featured sponsors and clubs, including the GCU Powerlifting Club, where students engaged in activities like deadlifting. Freshman Samantha Altschuler shared her experience, expressing her delight at lifting 135 pounds and her interest in further involvement, saying, “It’s a good way to get involved on campus, and I’ve wanted to work out with a community.”

The event showcased the diverse fitness offerings at GCU and the sense of community and support they provide to students. FitFest served as a platform to promote physical and mental well-being through exercise while fostering connections among participants.
