Peoria Unified School District school board member Heather Rooks said no one is standing up “for girls to have privacy” after Edwardsville School District in Illinois voted to spend $6.8 million on gender neutral bathrooms.

“6.8 million dollars on this!” Rooks said in a post on X. “Who is going to stand up for girls to have privacy. What’s next? Letting boys shower next to girls in the shower/locker rooms because it’s creating a safe space? How is any of this safe!?”

A post from X user Libs of TikTok shared the announcement after the school board vote. Both male and female students would be able to use these facilities indiscriminately.

“Now boys and girls will be able to hang out inside the bathroom area. What could possibly go wrong?!” the post read. “Not only will this endanger students, but it also reeks of corruption.”

Rooks was born in Arizona and attended Glendale Community College. She ran for Peoria school board member in 2022 and secured a seat with 36.4% of the vote, alongside Melissa Ewing who took the second open position.
