Grand Canyon University's music program is set to usher in the holiday season with its 11th annual Handel's "Messiah" winter concert. The event will take place at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, featuring a sing-along performance by the Canyon Choral Society tonight at 7 p.m. An additional performance is scheduled for Sunday at Bellevue Heights Church in Sun City.

The concert, directed by Assistant Dean of Music Dr. Juan Hernandez, will include classic Christmas music and carols, with contributions from the Canyon Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Mark Fearey on harpsichord. Dr. Hernandez noted, “It’s a fun group to listen to because there is always something for everybody.”

Dr. Hernandez emphasized the significance of the oratorio: "Handel’s 'Messiah' oratorio celebrates the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is meant to showcase the talents of students but really the breadth and depth of our department."

The university's music program includes three vocal groups: Critical Mass, Canyon Choral Society, and Canyon Chorale. These groups perform throughout the year, presenting up to 75 musical pieces across various genres.

Sophomore Joanna Heneveld expressed her enthusiasm for being part of this community: “I wanted to be surrounded by welcoming people... There is so much joy because it is a bunch of believers singing together about God.”

Critical Mass stands out for its performances at campus commencement ceremonies and other events. Senior Ryenne Morgan shared her experience: “I get to perfect my craft constantly... I get to do what I love all the time.”

Music students balance their participation in these groups with academic responsibilities, engaging in daily rehearsals to prepare for numerous concerts and events annually. Fearey explained that these activities aim "to build their stamina," ensuring continuous vocal development.

Sophomore Luke Lundberg reflected on managing his schedule: “Our professors understand what it is like to be music students... Sometimes when I feel like the schedule is a burden, I remember this is the only time I will get to do stuff like this.”

Hernandez highlighted the rewarding nature of their rigorous schedule: “It’s a lot of work, but it is fun, good and rewarding work.”

The Canyon Choral Society will also perform a Christmas concert next Tuesday at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley.
