Andrea Northup, a Sterling, Colorado native, has been associated with Grand Canyon University (GCU) for nearly a decade. As a former student, she made significant contributions to the university community and is now serving as the assistant director of state and community relations. Her journey began when she transferred from Northeastern Junior College in Colorado to GCU, where she actively participated in various initiatives including organizing Lopes Outdoors club trips and developing the first TEDxGCU event.
Northup's dedication to community service is evident through her work with Habitat for Humanity as a sponsor relations coordinator. She continues this commitment in her current role at GCU by collaborating with nonprofits, churches, businesses, and local groups alongside the city of Phoenix to enhance neighborhood safety.
Reflecting on her transition from a small town to a large university setting, Northup said: “I remember thinking, ‘Two years is not a long time. I have to make the most of this.’” Her proactive approach involved engaging with opportunities available at GCU's Colangelo College of Business (CCOB).
Her entrepreneurial spirit was showcased when she won the Canyon Challenge with her line of bowties aimed at benefiting Lakota American Indians living in poverty. She expressed surprise at her success: “I wouldn’t say flabbergasted – that’s such a silly term to use. But it’s so true.” This achievement aligned with CCOB's mission of giving business ventures a higher purpose.
Northup values her involvement with Habitat for Humanity and appreciates its alignment with GCU's vision for community transformation. She shared how this experience opened her eyes: “It also was something that opened my eyes to living life on mission.”
Northup remains committed to ensuring that GCU fulfills its role as a good neighbor within the community.
