Weekday commuters avoid two Phoenix areas, study reveals

Two areas in Phoenix have morning commuters looking for alternate routes each time they travel to and from work, according to a new study.

According to an ATRI study, the area that suffers the worst congestion is located on Interstate 17. The traffic backs up at the intersection of Interstate 10 and the intersection is ranked 30th in the U.S. for traffic headaches.

The average traffic speed coming into the intersection is only 42.8 mph. Traffic speed slows down to 34 mph between 7 and 8 a.m. Records show that traffic slows down to 22 mph between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.

The second worst area can be found while traveling down I-10 at the U.S. Highway 60 interchange. Reports show that the congested area ranked No. 69 in the U.S. Average speeds at the 1-17/I-10 intersection, slow down to 47.7 mph. Speeds slow down to 32 mph between 7 and 9 a.m. During the hours between 3 and 6 p.m. the average speed slows down to about 37 mph.
