CITY OF PEORIA: Peoria Reads Adds Virtual Events to Program

Onlinelearning

City of Peoria issued the following announcement on May 28

Mayor Cathy Carlat’s annual summer reading program, Peoria Reads, Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader, begins Monday, June 1 and runs through Aug. 1, 2020. This year’s program, now in its fifth year, will include virtual events for residents to participate in to encourage engagement with others in the community while physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Helping our children acquire a love of reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime,” said Mayor Carlat. “And, even though we’ve been dealing with some very real challenges in the past few months, we still love reading and we’re not going to let anything take that away. I’m thrilled to offer this program to our community and I look forward to seeing our young residents join us for this virtual reading adventure.”

The free program was created to encourage Peoria’s future leaders to read 20 minutes a day throughout the summer. Peoria residents can participate downloading two bookmarks to track their reading on www.peoriaaz.gov/library or by visiting the Peoria Main and Sunrise Mountain Libraries. The bookmarks can be turned for a chance to win numerous prizes, including Barnes and Noble gift cards, digital reading tablets, and one of three complete book sets. There will be two drawings for prizes, a mid-program drawing for the first bookmark in July and one at the end of the program in August for the second bookmark. To earn extra opportunities to be entered to win these prizes, residents can submit a video, picture or note thanking first responders, healthcare workers, teachers and the Peoria’s public works staff to the city’s, library’s and Mayor’s social media pages. Here is how to participate:

  • First Responders (June 15 – 19): Download a coloring page of a police badge and/or fire helmet from the library’s social media pages or website, decorate it and post a picture of it in the comment section of the original post.
  • Healthcare Workers (June 29 – July 3): Create a poster or sign thanking nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers and post a picture of it in the comment section of the original post.
  • Teachers and Educators (July 13 – 17): Leave a comment and/or photo in the comments section of the original post about your favorite book and teacher growing up.
  • Public Works Staff (July 27 – 31): Create a poster thanking your solid waste, water and street professionals from the Peoria Public Works Department who keep the city moving forward and post a picture of the artwork in the comment section of the original post.
