Maricopa County is offering a rental assistance program to residents who live outside the city limits of Phoenix and Mesa.

The $30 million CARES Act-funded program will provide up to three months of assistance to approximately 6,000 households. Some households may qualify for corresponding utility assistance.

“We want to keep as many people in their homes as possible because we know that family stability, safety and health begin with a roof over someone’s head,” Bruce Liggett, Director of Maricopa County Human Services Department, said according to Maricopa County.  “We understand the urgency and ask for people’s patience as we try to assist as many households as we can.”

The program will pay a set $1,500 per month directly to landlords. Eligibility is set higher than typical rent assistance programs. Households are eligible for up to three months assistance for past due or owed rent from March through December 2020. To apply, applicants need to submit evidence of financial hardship due to COVID-19, a photo, lease agreement and total household income. Applicants may also be eligible for additional services and supports.

The program is being started because federal and state eviction moratoriums expire in July. Supplemental payments to unemployment insurance also end at the end of the month.

To apply, contact the local Community Action Program in your area. For more information about the program, click here. Information about utility assistance can be found here.
