City of Peoria issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.
Starting Monday, Oct. 11, the city of Peoria will be hosting open houses, encouraging residents to participate in the redistricting process by drawing district maps.
As required by federal law, redistricting is the process of adjusting voting district boundaries in accordance with population shifts from 2020 census data. Peoria’s population has grown to 191,000, an increase of more than 35,000 residents since 2010. Peoria must submit the proposed city council district boundaries by the end of 2021. New city council district boundaries will be in effect for the August and November 2022 elections. Peoria residents will have many opportunities to participate by attending in-person and virtual open house events to learn about the redistricting requirements and the online mapping software that will be used to help rebalance the city council districts.
