WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack expressing concerns regarding the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) proposed rule on long-term school nutrition standards.

“While we should be promoting healthy eating for kids in school, I am deeply concerned that the Department of Agriculture’s proposed rule is unattainable for schools in my district and across our nation,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “The Department’s proposed rule adds stricter standards, even as schools are struggling to meet current nutrition standards due to the continued supply chain shortages and economic hardships. I urge the Department of Agriculture to consider these concerns and resist implementing standards that schools simply cannot meet.”

The USDA’s proposed rule creates new added sugar standards for the school lunch and breakfast programs and gradually reduces school meal sodium limits.
