The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services (PDSD) is excited to announce that public voting for the Casita Model Plan Competition is open Sunday, October 1, 2023 and will close on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 5 p.m. This competition, made possible by the generous AARP 2023 Community Challenge grant, has garnered widespread attention from the community and design professionals.
Key Details:
- Online Voting: The public can participate in the voting process through the casitas.tucsonaz.gov/ website.
- 63 Entries: 63 Casita designs have been submitted, showcasing diverse creative solutions to address Tucson's housing needs.
- Jury Panel: A carefully selected jury of experts will thoroughly evaluate and score all entries to ensure they meet the diverse requirements and benefits of Casitas in Tucson, including architectural variety, feasibility for various sites and conditions, and adaptability to multigenerational households.
- Public Vote: The public vote will contribute 10 points to the total 90-point score of each design. This approach allows Tucson residents to actively participate in shaping the future of housing in their community.
- Prize: The top 10 selections will win $1000, have their submissions added to the City of Tucson's Casita Model Plan Library, and will be eligible to waive building review fees.
The Casita Model Plan Competition is crucial in Tucson's ongoing commitment to affordable housing and livability. Since the approval of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Tucson a year ago, the city has recognized the potential of Casitas as an inclusive and adaptable housing option for the community, especially for older adults and multigenerational families.
With the support of the AARP Community Challenge grant and the engagement of Tucson residents, the Casita Model Plan Competition is set to drive innovation and enhance the livability of Tucson's neighborhoods.
For more information about the Casita Model Plan Competition and to cast your vote, visit the Casitas in Tucson website starting Monday. The announcement of the selected designs will take place in early November.
