Associated Students of GCU president Jagaar Halverson and vice president Amaya De La Cruz have concluded their term with pride and reflection on their time as student government leaders at Grand Canyon University.

Halverson expressed how GCU has influenced his life, stating, “GCU has changed my outlook on life. I didn’t come here as a believer. Now I leave here and I’m leading a Bible study, serving at my church and have been the student body president of the largest Christian university in the country.”

Reflecting on her experience, De La Cruz shared, “I would tell people that this is a special place, and you don’t understand how special until you are on campus and experience what is happening here.” She emphasized the transformative impact the university had on her life.

Dr. Tim Griffin, Vice President of Student Affairs, praised the duo for their dedication to the University and the student body, stating, “Their concern for the University and the welfare of the student body was apparent in every weekly lunch that we shared.”

Jeremy Mack, director of Student Engagement, commended Halverson and De La Cruz for their innovative approach in using artificial intelligence to gather student feedback and effectively communicate student needs.

Halverson and De La Cruz highlighted their commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, such as implementing student loading zones and simplifying the housing application process. These initiatives aimed to enhance the overall student experience at GCU.

Looking ahead, both student leaders are considering future opportunities at GCU. Halverson is exploring consulting for local politicians with aspirations for law school, while De La Cruz envisions a career as a school principal.

As they wrap up their term, Halverson and De La Cruz reflected on the challenges and rewards of their roles. De La Cruz noted the importance of professionalism and adaptability, stating, “We were just held to a different standard. But I think it taught us peak professionalism that you can’t get in any other job.”

Their dedication to representing student voices and their impact on campus initiatives have left a lasting impression on the Grand Canyon University community.
