Rick Schlesinger, the president of business operations for the Milwaukee Brewers, recently spoke to Grand Canyon University students during the T.W. Lewis Speaker Series at the Colangelo College of Business. Schlesinger shared insights into his career path and highlighted the resources available for students interested in sports management.

Addressing the students, Schlesinger remarked, “We never had the privilege of having sports management courses. That wasn't a thing.” He acknowledged the opportunities present for those pursuing careers in Major League Baseball, emphasizing the importance of financial knowledge and the myriad of marketing opportunities in baseball.

Schlesinger graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in political science and history and completed a law degree at Harvard. His sports career began when he served as legal counsel for the Los Angeles Angels after Disney’s purchase of the team. The Angels' World Series win coincided with his transition to the Milwaukee Brewers' front office after a proposal from a team executive.

Discussing his duties with the Brewers, Schlesinger explained, “I oversee ticket sales, sponsorships, broadcasting, public relations, media relations, community relations, broadcasting and nonbaseball events, like concerts.” He also advocates for internships, encouraging students to seize these opportunities to gain experience.

Schlesinger recalled a challenging moment involving a media controversy, stressing the importance of composure and sound judgment in such situations. He also touched on his personal life, highlighting the role of faith and ethics in business decisions.

Schlesinger attributed much of his success to the mentorship of influential figures such as former Angels president Tony Tavares. He emphasized the value of relationships built on integrity and respect.

The session offered students valuable insights into the sports industry and Schlesinger's candid reflections were well-received. Student Justin Grace noted, “It was really cool to hear how he dealt with challenges in his career.”

The next speaker for the T.W. Lewis series will be Arizona Supreme Court Justice William Montgomery.
