Lopes fans at Grand Canyon University were taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride during the recent NCAA watch parties at the Global Credit Union Arena. The excitement and passion of the fans were palpable as they cheered on the GCU men's basketball team in their tournament games.

During the watch party for the game against Saint Mary's, assistant professor of education and public address announcer for GCU men’s basketball, Dr. Paul Danuser, asked the crowd, “Do you believe we can win this game?” The resounding response from the fans showed their unwavering belief in the team. Senior marketing major Russell Merry expressed his belief by yelling enthusiastically from the stands, urging the team on.

The energy and enthusiasm were not limited to the students alone. University admissions counselor Ben Kravitz shared his game-watching rituals, including not watching free throws and enjoying an Uncrustable for energy during the intense moments of the game.

As the Lopes secured their first NCAA tournament win in program history by defeating Saint Mary's, the excitement among fans only grew. Students and alumni at the watch party could hardly contain their joy, with senior marketing major Jackson Raedeke expressing his total belief in the team going all the way in the tournament.

The high spirits continued into the game against Alabama, with fans rallying behind the team until the very end. Despite a close and intense match, the Lopes ultimately fell short, ending their tournament run. The disappointment was felt by many, including junior communications major Tyler Killgore, who praised Coach Bryce Drew and the team for their remarkable season.

Reflecting on the emotional journey of the NCAA watch parties, Dr. Paul Danuser, who has been with the men’s basketball team for 12 years, emphasized the privilege and special nature of reaching this level of competition. He encouraged everyone to savor the moment and appreciate the team's achievements.

The NCAA watch parties at Grand Canyon University were not just about basketball games; they were about shared experiences, unwavering support, and a sense of community coming together to cheer on their beloved Lopes.
