At the Multicultural Office-sponsored Culture Fest at Global Credit Union Arena, students from various cultural backgrounds came together to share their heritage with their peers. Nadia Fernando, a student from Sri Lanka, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about different countries, stating, "Just that it exists. That would be a great start."

The event featured performances such as Junior Miah Villegas' traditional Mexican dance and Junior Elissa Santos's Philippine folk dance. Attendees also had the opportunity to sample international foods like bao buns and engage in activities like trying out a dizi Chinese transverse flute.

Jazlyn Fernando, a senior biology major and Multicultural Office marketing coordinator, highlighted the significance of Culture Fest in showcasing diverse cultures, stating, "It’s such just a good experience."

With over 90 different cultures and nations represented in GCU's student body, the event aimed to promote inclusivity and cultural appreciation. Freshman Sharell Hernandez got a henna tattoo at the Malaysia table, where senior Hannah Prescott shared insights about the country.

The event also served as a platform for students like Vanessa Omondi from Kenya to share unique aspects of their culture. Omondi shared about Lake Turkana and the Kenyan saying "hakuna matata," emphasizing the importance of introducing others to her country.

Senior Ezekiel Moreno, who represented Canada at the event, showcased popular Canadian snacks and dishes like ketchup-flavored Lay’s potato chips and poutine. Moreno, coming from a diverse family background, was excited to share his cultural heritage with others.

Overall, Culture Fest was a celebration of diversity and unity, as expressed by Multicultural Office student coordinator Eugene Billings, who highlighted the event's role in creating a welcoming environment for all students. The upcoming Ho’olaule’a on April 9 will continue to promote cultural appreciation, with a focus on Hawaiian and Pacific Islander culture.
