Lindsey Eaton, a 30-year-old individual with autism, recently shared her experiences and insights as part of Autism Awareness Month. Eaton, who is also the LOPES Academy alumni relations specialist, highlighted the importance of creating awareness and acceptance for individuals with autism.
Eaton expressed her optimism and determination, stating, "I have autism, but it doesn’t stop me from achieving my dreams. As a matter of fact, I am diagnosed as AWESOME!" She emphasized the prevalence of autism, noting that "the chances are probably more common than you think that you know a friend, family member or co-worker with autism."
Reflecting on her journey with autism, Eaton recalled her diagnosis at the age of 15 and the relief it brought to her and her family. She found solace in the words of Psalm 139:15, recognizing her unique skills and abilities that empower her to advocate for inclusivity and empowerment for individuals with autism.
Having graduated from the LOPES Academy at the Cardon Center Program at GCU, Eaton spoke fondly of the impact the program had on her life, providing her with valuable skills and lifelong friendships. She now serves as the part-time LOPES Academy Alumni Relations Specialist, organizing events and fostering a sense of community among alumni.
In addition to her role at LOPES Academy, Eaton works as a part-time office assistant at Christ Lutheran School, where she actively engages with students in the Connections classroom for kids with autism. She also dedicates her time to advocacy by serving on boards such as the Arizona Association of People Supporting Employment First and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center Self-Advocate Advisory Board.
Looking ahead, Eaton remains committed to raising awareness and acceptance for autism by sharing her journey with various audiences. She emphasized the importance of self-care and balance in her life, enjoying moments with family and friends, indulging in self-care activities, and advocating for the autism community.
