New student body president Ashley Cote expressed her nerves during the ASGCU Inauguration, stating, "I was real nervous, no hiding it." She also reiterated her commitment to transparency, saying, "Our campaign promised one thing, for David and I to serve a term full of transparency." Cote, a sophomore from San Diego, emphasized the importance of communication and transparency in her role as a liaison between students and University leadership.
In her speech, Cote shared her passion for serving others and making Jesus' name known. She also highlighted the significance of gratitude and joy in her role as student body president, stating, "My hope is that we will find joy in these small moments and in our conversations."
Student body vice president David Pritchard, who matched Cote's warmth and enthusiasm, expressed his excitement about his new role, saying, "It’s finally hit: I’m no longer student body vice president-elect, I’m student body vice president." Pritchard, whose father encouraged him to run for student government before his passing, emphasized the importance of safety on campus and his plans to work on campus improvements.
Cote and Pritchard have already begun meeting with University leaders, including President Brian Mueller, to address campus safety and student needs. Cote acknowledged the responsibility of filling big shoes but expressed her readiness to learn and lead alongside Pritchard.
Outgoing president Jagaar Halverson praised the support he received during his term, emphasizing that "GCU is a special place." Vice president Amaya De La Cruz, who broke a decade-long streak without a woman in one of the top two positions at ASGCU, inspired Cote to pursue higher leadership positions. Cote hopes her and Pritchard's rapid rise within ASGCU will encourage other students to step up in leadership roles.
As Cote and Pritchard embark on their new roles, they are focused on collaboration, transparency, and serving the student body. Their dedication to communication and inclusivity sets the stage for a term aimed at making Grand Canyon University a better place for all students.
