Grand Canyon University alumna Dr. Danisha Keating recently shared her powerful story of overcoming adversity from foster care to earning a Ph.D. at a Fostering Futures event. During the celebration, Dr. Keating, holding her daughter Harper, spoke to students who have aged out of foster care, offering words of wisdom and encouragement.
Reflecting on her own challenging journey, Dr. Keating emphasized the resilience and determination needed to succeed. She shared, "I’m only 19, but I feel like I’m 90," acknowledging the weight of their experiences. Dr. Keating encouraged the students, highlighting their intelligence and hard work, saying, "You are smart; I saw those eyes. You are hard working. You are in college."
Despite facing numerous obstacles, including homelessness and self-doubt, Dr. Keating persevered and ultimately earned her Ph.D. She emphasized the importance of resilience, sharing her motto, "Just walk it... Stop pushing to the extreme." Through her own experiences, she inspired the students to defy the odds and pursue their dreams.
Dr. Keating also stressed the significance of mental health and self-worth, reminding the audience, "You are more important than a bad grade or a GPA." She emphasized the value of personal growth and decision-making, urging individuals to "Decide what to be, then go be it."
Moreover, Dr. Keating highlighted the non-linear nature of success, emphasizing the importance of building social and professional networks. She shared insights on the importance of waiting, strategizing, and learning from failures, encapsulating the message that "Success is never a straight line."
