Triple-digit temperatures have arrived. The following tips from Peoria’s water conservation team aim to help residents save water and support their plants and trees during Arizona’s scorching summer:
Residents are advised to turn on their landscape watering systems to adjust any overspray from sprinklers, plug drip emitters watering empty areas, and repair any leaks. It is also recommended to adjust the watering schedule to match the plants’ summer water needs. "Even thirsty grass should not be watered more than two times a week," according to the team. Established trees and shrubs should be watered once every other week in the summer when watering deeply.
Watering deeply and infrequently is emphasized as it ensures plants survive and thrive. Deep watering allows the water to reach the root zone of the plants, making them more resilient to Arizona's heat. Drip system run times should be set in hours, not minutes.
