The city of Glendale is offering a range of free, family-friendly activities in celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month. With high temperatures around the Valley and children on summer break, this initiative aims to provide diverse and enjoyable options for residents.

Glendale’s Parks and Recreation Department has introduced a National Parks and Recreation Month Challenge, suggesting daily activities throughout July. Residents can obtain an activity calendar from local centers or download it from the city's website. Participants can mark their completed activities on this calendar and return it to any Glendale center by July 26 to receive a prize pack during Family Play Date.

One of the highlighted events is a free astronomy class hosted by the Saguaro Astronomy Club on July 1 at O’Neil Recreation Center. The session, open to those aged six and older, will cover celestial objects and include sunspot viewing.

On July 13, Glendale’s Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center will host National Rock Day from 9 a.m. to noon. This event invites adults and children aged five and older to climb a rock wall and paint rocks.

Family Movie Night on July 19 at Glendale Civic Center will feature the Disney film “Moana” with pre-movie activities starting at 5 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

An Ice Cream Social for individuals aged 18 and older is scheduled for July 24 at Glendale Adult Center from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Additional activities that can be enjoyed from home or work include playing board games, drinking eight glasses of water per day, and creating nature-themed art with online guidance from Glendale staff.

Since its inception in July 1985, the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) has recognized professionals and volunteers who facilitate recreational opportunities nationwide. These efforts enhance physical and mental health while strengthening communities.
