Andrii Tyshchenko, senior pastor for New Generation Christian Church in Russia and Ukraine, visited Grand Canyon University (GCU) recently and was struck by the vibrant campus life. Observing students enjoying a wide array of educational opportunities, Tyshchenko humorously suggested to University Pastor Dr. Tim Griffin, "Why don’t you open a branch (of GCU) in Ukraine?"

Tyshchenko's visit highlighted the stark contrast between GCU and the current situation in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. He noted through translator Ivan Kunderenko that there is no accredited Christian university in Ukraine, which he described as a "broken problem."

The visit included discussions about the lack of quality Christian education in Ukraine and Tyshchenko's desire for similar institutions there. His observations were shared during a meeting with Griffin and later with members of Young Women for America at GCU's Colangelo College of Business.

During his visit, Tyshchenko also reflected on the war's impact on religious communities in Ukraine. Since Russia's invasion began, 25% of Ukraine has been occupied, resulting in the loss of 100 churches from his denomination. He mentioned being summoned for arrest but avoided interrogation in Moscow.

Griffin proposed connecting Tyshchenko with Dave Donaldson of CityServe to potentially enhance aid efforts to Ukrainians affected by the conflict. Since the invasion began, around 120,000 people have been evacuated from combat zones, and approximately 400,000 have embraced Christianity.

Tyshchenko emphasized the importance of chaplains within the Ukrainian army and shared his support by purchasing vehicles for them. He expressed uncertainty about returning home due to the war but remains hopeful.

Addressing GCU students, Tyshchenko quoted Romans from the Bible: "Good news is God’s power for salvation to those who believe." He encouraged spreading positive messages as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

"Amen," concluded Tyshchenko.
