Moon Valley honorees celebrated at GUHSD Achievement Above All ceremony

The Glendale Union High School District recently held its annual Achievement Above All celebration to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the community. This event recognized a teacher, student, student group, support staff member, and volunteer from Moon Valley High School.

Vince Pernick was named Teacher of the Year. With 16 years of teaching experience, he has been a mentor and inspiration to many students in the district. Pernick teaches culinary arts at Moon Valley and has helped his students develop leadership skills through the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Dr. Lora Zimmer, a fellow teacher, stated that "Vince is a team builder who strives to bring everyone together through fun and good food."

Lynn Ong received the Student of the Year award. Ong ranks in the top 1% of his class and has been active in various clubs while maintaining a rigorous academic schedule. He has won first place in the FBLA Website Development competition statewide and plans to pursue Computer Engineering in college. Principal Kort Miner described him as "a shining example of perseverance, talent, and resilience."

The Cheer Squad was honored as Student Group of the Year for their role in promoting school spirit and sportsmanship. Under Coach Shauntel Sussex's guidance, they have achieved several accolades at both state and national levels. Teacher Nicole Rearick expressed her pride in Coach Sussex and her team for their dedication and athletic excellence.

Rachel Schumer was recognized as Support Staff of the Year. She began working at Moon Valley High School in 2014 and currently serves as a Data Processor in the counseling department. Her coworker Rachel Bauer praised her compassion for friends, family, animals, and her ability to keep the school running smoothly.

Jorge Romero received recognition as Volunteer of the Year for his work with Moon Valley's varsity football team as an assistant coach. Romero also teaches physical education at a local elementary school. Reflecting on his role, he shared that "volunteer coaching can transform lives" by providing a platform to positively impact youth.

The event highlighted these individuals' achievements and contributions to Moon Valley High School.
