The Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) Governing Board has announced the appointment of Mr. Matthew Belden as the district's new superintendent, starting on July 1, 2025. Mr. Belden will take over from Mr. Brian Capistran, who is retiring after a three-decade tenure with GUHSD, including ten years as superintendent.

Mr. Belden currently holds the position of Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Athletics at GUHSD. His 25-year career in education includes roles such as teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal within the district. He has also contributed to the Curriculum and Instruction Department as Administrator for School Safety and Academic Support, managing Title Funds and school improvement efforts.

In addition to his work within GUHSD, Mr. Belden serves as President of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) Board, influencing educational initiatives across the state.

Having grown up in the West Valley and attended Glendale schools alongside his wife, Mr. Belden is deeply connected to the community he now serves. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and a master's degree from Ottawa University.

The Governing Board expressed confidence in Mr. Belden's ability to uphold GUHSD's tradition of excellence and leadership in education.

"Passionate about academic excellence," said a statement from the board, "Matt remains committed to making a positive impact for GUHSD students, staff, parents, and the GUHSD community."
