GUHSD board honors five leaders from Independence High School with top awards

The GUHSD Governing Board has acknowledged the accomplishments of five prominent figures from Independence High School with the Achievement Above All award, highlighting their significant contributions to the school and the wider community.

Ms. Sarah Farson, a graduate of Greenway High School and chair of the performing arts department at Independence, received recognition as the Teacher Recipient. Her work in theatre and stagecraft has significantly enriched the performing arts program. Choir Director Katie Sweeny noted Farson as "an exceptional teacher and a passionate advocate for the performing arts."

Brianna Jackson earned the Student Recipient award for her leadership as Student Body President since her arrival from Maryland as a freshman. English Department Chair Ms. Marshall praised her as "a remarkable individual whose kindness and leadership create a positive school environment." AP Government teacher Lori Sheets described her as "a future changemaker."

The Unified Sports Club received acknowledgment as the Student Group Recipient. This club, which brings together students of diverse abilities through various sports, has been recognized for promoting inclusion and teamwork. With leaders Julissa Garcia Meza, Diego Fuentes Camacho, and Esteban Ramirez, along with sponsor Jennifer Perry, the program was awarded the "National Banner of Recognition" by the Special Olympics.

The Support Staff Recipient, Julie Holt, serves as Independence’s bookstore manager and has been a school staple since 2010. Her work in managing the bookstore and supporting various student groups has significantly impacted the school's operations. Assistant Principal Kelsea Threadgill called her "a crucial part of the school community." Winnie Moore, the Career Transition Service Specialist, described Holt as "a faithful friend and coworker."

Volunteer Griselda Navarro, honored as the Volunteer Recipient, has significantly supported the school's football and cheer programs. Her efforts, alongside her husband, in providing resources for athletes were acknowledged by varsity football player Freddie Solomon. Head Varsity Coach Shane Hagen remarked that "Griselda was instrumental in building a foundation for lasting support in our program."

These individuals have been recognized for their dedication and positive influence on Independence High School.
