Michelle Fortin, a communications instructor at Grand Canyon University (GCU), has been instrumental in transforming the university's broadcasting program since her arrival in 2020. Known for her ability to make things happen, Fortin once managed to secure a white horse for a comedy video with just two phone calls.

At GCU, she collaborates with Barry Buetel, Executive Director of Broadcast, to enhance hands-on education in broadcasting. Together, they founded the Future Broadcasters Club, which has grown significantly and now produces the student news show "Lopes Lately." They have also revamped course offerings and are working on establishing a new major in broadcasting.

Fortin's dedication extends beyond regular hours as she is known for her commitment to students. Greenlee Clark, president of the club, describes Fortin as a supportive figure who encourages students to excel. Lexi Lambert, executive producer of "Lopes Lately," credits Fortin with providing real-world insights into the fast-paced nature of news production.

With extensive experience in broadcast journalism and public relations, Fortin emphasizes practical learning. Her efforts have already helped several graduates secure jobs in various markets across the country. Bela Olague, one such graduate now working as a multimedia journalist in Albuquerque, praises Fortin for inspiring her to pursue journalism as a positive force.

Fortin's influence is evident not only through job placements but also through fostering an environment where students are eager to learn and contribute without academic credit or pay. As GCU continues to develop its broadcasting facilities and curriculum, Fortin remains focused on guiding students while maintaining balance in her life—a lesson she learned during a year-long personal reset.

"These students are the best I’ve ever taught," says Fortin. She believes that GCU will eventually become a key destination for aspiring broadcasters alongside established institutions like ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism.
