Two newly elected members of the Glendale City Council, Dianna Guzman and Lupe Conchas Jr., joined current Mayor Jerry Weiers and Councilmember Ray Malnar in taking their oaths of office during a ceremony on Tuesday night. The event marked their official commitment to serving the residents of Glendale.

Sue Breding, Glendale Communications Director and emcee for the ceremony, described it as a traditional event where officials are sworn into office by a judge, signing an oath to serve according to Glendale’s charter.

The evening began with a Presentation of Colors by the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol, followed by Nicole Santos performing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Judge Enrique Medina-Ochoa administered the oath for Cactus District Councilmember Conchas. Yucca District Councilmember Guzman and Mayor Weiers were sworn in by Glendale Presiding Judge Nicholas C. DiPiazza. Sahuaro District Councilmember Malnar had taken his oath earlier with Judge DiPiazza; a video of his speech was shown during the ceremony.

Conchas reflected on overcoming personal challenges and committed to addressing affordable housing and economic growth. He emphasized community support, stating: “We will work to revitalize downtown Glendale, creating a vibrant hub for arts, culture and commerce.”

Guzman expressed gratitude toward her family and supporters: “Together we have an opportunity to unite in service to this city,” she said. She pledged to lead with humility and ensure Glendale remains a place of opportunity.

Mayor Weiers reiterated the council's dedication as "servant leaders" focused on improving lives daily. He acknowledged potential disagreements but stressed common goals: “We’re all Americans…and we want what’s best for our fellow citizens.”

Councilmember Malnar highlighted his pride in the city's progress over his nine years on the council: “This city has made great strides towards creating high-paying jobs...while at the same time reducing our property tax levy,” he noted.

The ceremony concluded with congratulations extended to all newly sworn-in officials.
