The spring semester at Grand Canyon University began with a record number of student clubs, totaling 125. The Spring Club and Community Fair, held at the Canyon Activity Center, showcased these diverse groups, reflecting the interests and trends among students.
Student Engagement leaders emphasize that clubs thrive as they provide a community for students seeking friendships. Several new clubs have formed in recent years for various reasons.
The GCU Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander Student Association is one such club that emerged recently. It includes many students from Hawaii and celebrates shared identity. Dylan Ancheta, known as the club's "cook," has become Arizona-certified for food preparation and has prepared dishes like katsu (Hawaiian), sinangag (Philippines), and Korean chicken at past gatherings.
Another new group is the Native American Club, led by president Crystal Lomayestewa. Coming from the Gila River Indian Community, Lomayestewa initially struggled to find friends on campus. She noted that many Native Americans face similar challenges when adapting to new cultural norms away from their homes. The club aims to unite different tribes to share culture and community. "We are all one," Lomayestewa stated.
The Lopes Run Club caters to those interested in fitness with a fun twist. Members participate in themed runs around campus, such as SpongeBob or '90s night events. Vice President Lorenzo DeViro humorously admitted he joined without knowing how to run but has since learned.
Spoon University GCU focuses on cooking and eating together. This chapter of spoonuniversity.com shares recipes among members who enjoy cooking or visiting local restaurants. Club president Hannah Warren highlighted her family's spaghetti sauce as a favorite dish shared within the group.
The fair also provided information about becoming student leaders involved in significant campus organizations like the Canyon Activities Board.
