Grammy and Emmy Award-winning audio engineer Andy Zulla has joined Grand Canyon University (GCU) as an audio engineering professor in the College of Arts and Media. Known for his work with renowned artists such as Rod Stewart, Kelly Clarkson, and Diana Ross, Zulla brings a wealth of experience to the university.
Zulla's journey began in his parents' basement, where he set up a personal recording studio at 18. His career took off when he won a Grammy Award in 2004 for mixing Rod Stewart's album "Stardust: The Great American Songbook, Vol. III." Over the years, he has worked with numerous artists and contributed to successful projects like NBC's "SMASH" and FOX Sports' broadcasts.
Sophomore Gavin Weiskopf expressed excitement about learning from Zulla: “I noticed there is a Wikipedia article as the first thing that popped up... He is well-versed in this field, and it’s a blessing to have him here at GCU.”
Zulla also shares anecdotes from his early career days, including working with singer Debbie Gibson. “I sent her a cassette because that is what we had back then,” Zulla recalled about their initial interaction.
At GCU, Zulla teaches sound reinforcement classes where students learn practical skills like setting up microphones and controlling audio input. His goal is to prepare students for careers in music production by providing hands-on experience.
Dr. Craig Detweiler, Dean of the College of Arts and Media at GCU, praised Zulla's contributions: "He has been our CAM 'Rookie of the Year,' as well as an all-star addition to our team."
Zulla's move to Phoenix prompted him to apply for the teaching position at GCU. “The biggest thing I want my students to gain is the hands-on stuff so when they come out of here, they can get a gig,” he said.
With over 20 gold and platinum albums under his belt, Andy Zulla aims to inspire future generations through his teaching role at Grand Canyon University.
