Allie Galas, a fourth-grade teacher at Jessie Beck Elementary School in Reno, Nevada, has become the seventh Grand Canyon University (GCU) alumnus in four years to receive the Milken Educator Award. The award, known as the "Oscars of Teaching," includes a $25,000 prize and recognizes educators who excel in their profession.

Galas completed her master's degree in educational administration at GCU in 2016. She was honored for her innovative teaching methods that include restorative problem-solving, hands-on projects, and promoting collaboration among students. Her approach empowers students to lead classroom discussions and lessons.

The Milken Family Foundation has awarded over $75 million to early to mid-career educators who contribute to excellence in education. Nearly 50 educators are recognized annually, including another GCU alumnus, Luke Kanine from Frankenmuth, Michigan, who received the award earlier this year.

Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, presented the award to Galas. “We commend Allie Galas for creating a nurturing environment for students to excel,” she said. “Outside of the classroom, Allie is a valued mentor who strengthens all elements – from pedagogy and family involvement to social-emotional learning – that ensure every student has access to a high-quality education.”
