Back in 1986, Mayor George Renner established a commission to encourage Glendale's youth to take pride in their community. Today, under the leadership of Mayor Jerry P. Weiers, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) continues this mission. The commission, which consists of local high school students, actively engages in community service projects to make a positive impact on the city.
On March 23, MYAC members took part in a clean-up effort on Camelback Road between 67th Avenue and 75th Avenue in Glendale. Mayor Weiers expressed admiration for the commission's ongoing efforts: "It is remarkable to see how far this commission has come since 1986," said Mayor Weiers. "Each year our commission continues to impress me. These remarkable young men and women are committed to keeping our community beautiful and safe. I would not be surprised one bit if you are looking at the future Mayor of our city in this group."
The commission includes high school students from both public and private schools within Glendale. For the 2024-25 school year, it has 31 members: 11 freshmen, 12 sophomores, five juniors, and three seniors. These students have collectively completed over 500 hours of community service, averaging more than 16 hours per student.
"We have a superb group of young leaders who I believe in wholeheartedly," said Mayor Weiers. "These young people are truly the best of the best. The city of Glendale is in great hands for decades to come with this bunch."
The commission aims to involve students who either reside within the municipal boundaries of Glendale or attend schools in the area. It provides a platform for students to contribute to their community through various service projects.
For students entering high school or those currently enrolled, MYAC offers an opportunity to join and learn more about making a difference in Glendale.
