City of Surprise issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.
Surprise, along with the other water providers operating within the city, recognize the necessity for protecting our water supply and are committed to providing quality water services to residents and businesses. At the September 7 City Council Meeting, city staff presented a proposed update to the city of Surprise Community Water Systems Drought Preparedness and Resiliency Plan, last approved in 2008. That draft plan is now available online for public review.
The plan outlines short- and long-term strategies for managing and sustaining our water portfolio. It ensures that best management practices are in place to minimize the negative impacts of long-term water shortages. It also provides ways for the city, other water providers operating within the city, businesses and customers to aid in water demand reductions when a drought or shortage occurs.
Surprise will likely enact its Drought Preparedness and Resiliency Plan for 2022, when the Colorado River System will be in a “Tier 1” shortage status, meaning less water supplies available to Arizona.
Due to Arizona’s priority system, our city supplies will not experience a reduction. This shortage declaration does not mean a shortage at your tap. However, as part of the first phase of our Drought Preparedness and Resiliency Plan, the city will focus on enhanced water conservation education and increased conservation resources for our residents.
