WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) expressed her support for the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act, highlighting the importance of ensuring the payment of military and Border Patrol personnel while advancing critical spending cuts and urging the U.S. Senate to take action to secure the southern border.
In a statement, Lesko stated, “Today, I voted for the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act to ensure that the men and women defending our nation in the military and the Border Patrol are paid, while also advancing critical spending cuts and putting pressure on the U.S. Senate to secure our southern border. House Republicans have already approved funding for nearly 70% of the United States government and these important bills await consideration in the U.S. Senate. This stopgap funding measure would have allowed us to continue our work to rein in spending in the remaining appropriations bills over the next 30 days. I am disappointed that this measure did not pass, but remain committed to reducing spending and securing the border."
The Spending Reduction and Border Security Act, also known as H.R. 5525, aimed to fund the government until October 31, 2023, with a significant 29.9% reduction in non-defense, non-Veterans Affairs, non-Homeland Security, and non-disaster relief spending. Additionally, the bill intended to enhance border security by implementing key provisions from House Republicans' H.R. 2, including the recommencement of border wall construction and the reinstatement of the remain in Mexico policy.
Despite the measure not passing, Lesko remains steadfast in her commitment to reducing spending and securing the border.
