Beginning today, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) Street Maintenance Division has launched Operation Freeze in preparation for the forecasted freezing temperatures. The main objective of Operation Freeze is to ensure the safety of motorists by keeping the city's bridge decks free from ice.

As part of this safety initiative, City crews are placing "Wet Road Ahead" signs at the entrances of bridges and applying magnesium chloride on the bridge decks. This chemical compound effectively lowers the freezing temperature of water and prevents the formation of ice on the roadways. It is important to note that the light coating of magnesium chloride has no negative impact on the environment, including ground water, surface water, and vegetation.

"Magnesium chloride is an effective ice suppressant agent lasting for approximately 10 days. Rainfall diminishes its effectiveness," explained a spokesperson from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility.

Over 50 bridge decks across the city will be sprayed and monitored throughout the evening and early morning to ensure that ice has not formed at the crossings. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving in these areas, particularly when the possibility of ice exists on the roadways.

The City of Tucson is committed to maintaining the safety of its residents and visitors. If you have any questions, issues, or suggestions regarding Operation Freeze or any other transportation matters, you are encouraged to reach out to the City through their Constituent Contact Form.

With Operation Freeze in full swing, the City of Tucson is taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with freezing temperatures. By implementing this safety initiative and regularly monitoring the bridge decks, the City aims to provide a safer driving experience for everyone during the winter season.
