On January 8, 2024, Southern Arizona Paving will commence a road improvement and street safety project on Old Spanish Trail from Broadway to Harrison Road in Tucson. This project is part of the Proposition 411 - Tucson Delivers Better Streets | Safe Streets Program, which aims to enhance the city's infrastructure.

The first phase of the project will involve lowering manhole covers and water valve covers within the designated area. Following this, the asphalt will be pulverized or milled and replaced with new asphalt. Throughout the construction process, one travel lane in each direction will be maintained, and access to residential and business driveways will be allowed, except when heavy equipment is directly in front of a driveway.

It is important to note that the intersection of Camino Seco and Old Spanish Trail will not be included in this project. However, as part of the Tucson Delivers Safe Streets initiative, the multi-use path within the project limits will also be milled and repaved.

The construction work will be carried out from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2024. Motorists are advised to be mindful of the project and to expect potential delays in the area.

In May 2022, Tucson voters approved Proposition 411, which allocated a 10-year half-cent sales tax extension to fund neighborhood street improvements and systemwide street safety projects. The total projected sales tax generated over this 10-year program is estimated to be $740 million, with 80 percent dedicated to neighborhood streets and 20 percent to street safety projects.

As always, the City of Tucson encourages constituents to ask questions, report issues, or submit suggestions through their Constituent Contact Form, which can be found on their website.

With this road improvement project, Tucson is taking a proactive approach to enhance the safety and quality of its streets for the benefit of the community.

Electronic message boards will be in place ahead of the project to alert motorists of this upcoming work.
