On January 15, 2024, Borderland Construction, contracted by the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), will commence a significant roadway improvement project on Silverbell Road. The project, part of the Proposition 101 - Tucson Delivers Better Streets Program, aims to enhance the quality and safety of the road from Congress Street to St. Mary's Road.

To kick off the project, crews will first locate underground utility lines along Silverbell Road. This initial work will involve lane restrictions to accommodate the shifting of vehicles around the work area. The utility work is expected to last approximately one week.

Once the utility lines are assessed, a full water line replacement will take place along the east side of Silverbell Road. This replacement is set to begin at the southern end of the project, near Congress Street, and progress northward. The water line replacement is estimated to take approximately four months to complete.

Following the water line replacement, crews will initiate the roadway improvements. The plan includes installing ADA compliant ramps, removing the old asphalt through milling, replacing the subgrade, and repaving with new asphalt. Throughout the project, one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction.

The construction work will be conducted from Monday to Friday, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. The project is projected to be finished by December 2024, although the schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

The Tucson Delivers Better Streets Program, funded by a $100 million improvement initiative, was made possible by the approval of a half-cent sales tax increase in May 2017. This program aims to enhance the overall road infrastructure in Tucson.

The City of Tucson urges residents and motorists to be aware of the upcoming project and to exercise caution while traveling through the work zone. Electronic message boards have been installed to provide advance notice to drivers. The City appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the community as they strive to improve the neighborhood streets. In conclusion, the Silverbell Road improvement project will soon be underway, with Borderland Construction leading the efforts. This initiative, part of the Tucson Delivers Better Streets Program, will involve locating utility lines, replacing the water line, and implementing crucial roadway improvements. The project is expected to be completed by December 2024, and the City of Tucson appreciates the public's cooperation and support during this period of enhancement and safety improvement.
